Islamic Inheritance Law (Faraid)

Islamic inheritance (الميراث / الفرائض) is detailed in the Quran, primarily in Surah An-Nisa (4:11-12, 4:176). Allah has prescribed fixed shares for specific heirs, and the remaining estate goes to residuary heirs (asaba).

Key Principles

Debts and funeral expenses are paid first, before distribution
Up to 1/3 of the estate can be given as wasiyyah (bequest) to non-heirs
Fixed-share heirs (Ashab al-Furud) receive their prescribed portions first
Residuary heirs (Asaba) receive what remains
A male heir generally receives double the share of a female at the same level
