Last Third of the Night Calculator

Find when the last third of the night begins for Tahajjud and Qiyam al-Layl.

We need your location to calculate Maghrib and Fajr times, which determine the night period.

What is the Last Third of the Night?

The night in Islam is measured from Maghrib (sunset) to Fajr (dawn). This period is divided into three equal parts. The last third is the most blessed time, when Allah descends to the lowest heaven.

“Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, and says: Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?” — Sahih Bukhari & Muslim

How is It Calculated?

The calculation divides the total night time (Maghrib to Fajr) into three equal portions. The last third begins at two-thirds of the way through the night. This is the ideal time for Tahajjud prayer, dua, istighfar, and reciting Quran.
